Associate degrees in culinary skills, culinary arts, or bakery and pastries are some of the most common two-year vocational programs offered. This curriculum brings the best of both worlds, with a focus on culinary techniques AND the needs of liberal arts.
Popular UG-level courses in the culinary field include the Bachelor of Hospitality Management – Culinary Specialization, BVoc in Baking and Cooking, Bachelor of Culinary Arts, Bachelor of Culinary Technology and Culinary Arts, BVoc in Culinary Operations, Bachelor of Culinary Science, BHM Culinary in Arts, and BA in International Cuisine. Currently, a culinary school education typically costs more than $ 30,000. This is a high price that most students should consider and a price that will force many students to use financial aid.
Professional chefs prepare and cook food and supervise other culinary professionals in the kitchen. They can work in restaurants, hotels, resorts, private residences, and a variety of other catering services. Most chefs enter employment and work with training and experiences through first-level positions, while some complete a range of post-secondary education programs in culinary arts.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), professional cooks often start as cooks or other lower-level workers in the kitchen (www.bls.gov). With experience, they can move to more advanced positions and eventually become cooks. While training is not entirely necessary, many chefs combine their experience with post-secondary education.

Ambitious chefs can participate in formal education through culinary programs offered by community colleges, universities, and culinary institutions. Some cooks complete a certificate program that usually takes a few months, while others earn a 2-year bachelor’s degree or a 4-year bachelor’s degree. The culinary program focuses on classroom teaching and direct training in the kitchen. Courses typically include safety and cleaning, cooking and cooking techniques, food preparation, and nutrition. Depending on the program, students may be asked to complete an internship program.

Alternatively, potential chefs can acquire culinary knowledge through formal internships that combine direct training with classroom training, sponsoring internships for culinary schools, and food industry organizations such as the American Culinary Federation (ACF). Professional chefs can demonstrate their culinary skills and increase their chances of advancement by earning a voluntary certification. Eligibility requirements vary by certification level, but generally require little work experience and post-secondary education. Eligible candidates must pass a written and practical test. After obtaining a certificate, the chief must complete at least 80 hours of continuing education and renew the certificate every five years.
